M.A. in Archaeology, Colorado State University
Dr. Mary Van Buren
I started at the Crow Canyon Archaeological Center in April 2014 as an Educator and Curriculum Developer then changed departments and became a field archaeologist in June 2015. Crow Canyon Archaeological Center is a non-profit program that conducts archaeological research in the Mesa Verde region. Our three part mission includes archaeological research, educational opportunities for the general public, and collaboration with American Indians. I am responsible for conducting Crow Canyon’s archaeological research, working with participants excavating with us, and teaching educational programs. I feel very lucky to work for a non-profit organization that combines so many of my passions.
Note to Current Students
The Department of Anthropology helped me get to where I am today by allowing me to combine my passions for archaeology and education. The M.A. portfolio option in the Department of Anthropology allowed me to do a more applied piece where I conducted research to a specific end, but then translated research into a curriculum usable by teachers familiar to the site. The project was very meaningful and opened up many doors for me.
