according to Nick Johs' senior honors thesis: The Daily Grind:
Osteoarthritis in a 19th century cemetery sample from the Colorado
Insane Asylum. Johs undertook the study of osteoarthritis in the
skeletal collection from the late 19th century Colorado Insane Asylum
that was located in Pueblo, Colorado in order to assess whether strenuous
physical labor or activity had any notable effect on the occurrence of
osteoarthritis in the skeleton
Anthropologists and epidemiologists have frequently examined populations to look for the increased occurrence of osteoarthritis associated with workloads and activity patterns. While Johs research did not indicate an increased frequency of osteoarthritis and joint damage as would be expected in this population, the reasons for this remain locked in the asylum for now.
Nick Johs graduated with a major in Anthropology and a minor in Spanish.
